Social and Environmental Justice Award

God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young will see visions. (Acts 2:17 CEB)

All MHS graduates are eligible to apply for the Social and Environmental Justice Award

Each year St. John's United awards  a student graduating from Marathon High School who has been active in, and/or has demonstrated a commitment to, one or more of the following areas:

  • Indigenous Right Relations
  • Gender Justice
  • Anti-racism
  • Interfaith/Intercultural Relations
  • Poverty & Economic Justice
  • International or Local Peace
  • Environmentalism

This annual award reflects our faith community's commitment to these social issues, as well as our belief in the power of youth to transform our world.

The Details:

The applicant will provide a statement (max 250 words) describing their involvement in and commitment to one of the above areas. This statement may – but not necessarily - describe how the applicant will use the award to further develop their understanding and/or practice of social or environmental justice.

Applicants may provide a community or teacher reference addressing their commitment to social or environmental justice with their documentation.

The recipient of the award will be determined by the Official Board of St. John’s United Church, on the recommendation of the Awards Committee or the Principal of Marathon High School.

Recipients may use the award in any way they choose to increase their capacity for social or environmental endeavours. (I.e. The award is not tied to acceptance or attendance in a College or University program.)

The value of the award will be $1,000 each year.

In a given year, if a suitable applicant is not found, the award for that year will not be presented.
